As a beginner photographer, I have learned so much since joining the club. I am beginning to find my way round my camera and have also enjoyed using Lightroom to play around with images on the computer. I am still trying out things to find what I like – but do find myself drawn to lines and shapes in the environment – often ending up with a black and white image.

I have been into photography most of my life but I only really learnt my way around a camera in 2012. Photography is my hobby but also a very big passion in my life, I have a different range of genres in photography. Since joining Herne Bay Photographic Club not only have I learnt a lot but I have also made many friends there.

I have always loved taking photographs, but only invested in a proper DSLR camera a couple of years ago. Since then I have been on an incredible – and very enjoyable – learning curve, and I love that fact that there is still so much to master. I really love landscape and architectural photography but am enjoying the challenge of trying new things now that I am part of a wonderfully supportive club.

As to my person, I am one of those dinosaurs who still only uses the camera in Auto mode and therefore am overawed by other club members’ ingenuity, imagination and determination. In internal competitions I am usually at the bottom of the score line, but strangely enough I still quite like my images.

I have always fancied myself as a photographer. But I also always fancied myself as a footballer, rugby player, dinghy racer, wit and cook. Actual results in those areas showed those to be delusions. Joining this club has improved my images, but has also made me more aware of photo opportunities. It can work for you too, because the other members; the learning activities and talks; the competitions; (club, interclub, county and national); all provide an environment in which to improve.
I enjoy sharing what I see and seeing what the other members share with me.

I’ve been taking photos since my late teens, a lot of them being landscapes and architecture but more generally, anything that catches my eye and the Camera Club has encouraged me to try different genres and to get out of my comfort zone. I originally used film cameras and experienced that magic moment in the darkroom when the image appears in the developer tray. I switched to digital about 10 years ago, the magic is different but it’s still there.

My father, a keen photographer, gave me my first camera when I was 10 and I have dipped in and out of photography ever since. I’ve taken everything from family weddings to Fakes and Forgeries at the Assay Office when I worked there. Digital is easier, with no worries about how many photos you are taking. I enjoy Landscapes and animal photos but take a wide variety of subjects. I joined Herne Bay Camera Club 2 years ago. With help from their practical nights and talks, I am getting to grips with Photoshop, and I have met some interesting people.

After getting my Pentax in 2009, I took the OU course T189 which lead me to join Flickr and the T189 challenge groups. I then did a 365 which went on for 18 months and helped me develop my ‘seeing’ eye. I joined HBPC and have enjoyed meeting and working with fellow photographers in the wider PAGB community. I gained my LRPS in 2015 and ARPS in 2017. I also gained my CPAGB in 2018. I also enter National and International salons and have been awarded Gold, Bronze and many HM ribbons for my images and gained AFIAP in 2018 and BPE1* in 2019.
